I’ve been excited about the wave of new Ideas sets based on original concepts, and the latest Birds set is no exception. I had voted for the set, so I was very excited when it got the requisite 10,000 votes and was approved to become an official set. I braved the mad crowds at my local Lego store on New Years Day and bought myself a copy.
The winter holiday has finally passed and both my son and I have a wealth of new LEGO sets. One of the cool sets that my son received is Maula’s Ice Mammoth Stomper. He didn’t get many of the sets from the last wave of Chima sets, so he jumped for joy when this one arrived.
I’ve been on the fence for a while about the Lego Minecraft sets. The Micro World sets are practically parts packs for microscale builders and I’ve bought a few on sale. The new wave of minifigure scale sets are something else though. I decided to take the plunge and get The First Night, what appeared to be a perfect introductory set. My latest seasonal set purchase is this cute little turkey. I’ve enjoyed the bat that I built for Halloween, so I picked up this handsome gobbler a couple of weeks ago. Lately, I’ve been spending a bit more time around train and town AFOLs and it has had me thinking about straying into minifig scale buildings. I saw some lovely models last month at BrickCon, that inspired me even further. I don’t own any of the ‘modular’ buildings that Lego has released, so the idea of building one of my own is a bit daunting. Lucky for me, The LEGO Neighborhood Book is the perfect introduction.
This last weekend I attended my second Lego convention: BrickCon 2014. As the longest running convention on the West coast, BrickCon draws builders from all across the country and internationally. I love these little seasonal sets that Lego puts out. They’re always displayed near the registers in the Lego stores and I have to practice some restraint to not toss one onto the pile every time we go. This cute little bat and his pumpkin were a bit too much to resist.
Like many middle-aged AFOLs, the greys, blues and yellows of classic space Lego dominate my memory of childhood building. Now that I am getting back into the hobby, it is exciting to see the renaissance of neo-classic space. Many talented builders are still inspired by those happy little space men in their brightly colored space suits, and it was this nostalgia that helped fuel the successful Lego Ideas campaign for the Exo Suit.
The Lego Ideas (formerly Cuusoo) site has been producing some fantastic sets in the last couple of years, but many of them have been based on licensed properties that don’t interest me very much. This latest set, the Research Institute, garnered its support around the desire to see more female minifigs scientists. As my interest in minifigs has been growing, I bought a copy to check it out.
